Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona (CCCB)
Symbiotic Earth will be shown as part of the exhibit Science Friction: Living Among Companion Species which will be on view at the museum between June 12 and November 28, 2021. The starting point for the exhibition is the scientific evidence that all terrestrial species are linked by symbiotic, interdependent relationships. The exhibit is curated by Maria Ptqk. Ricard Guerrero and Rubén Duro Pérez are the scientific advisors for the project. Exact screening times for Symbiotic Earth are to be announced. For more information go to the CCCB website.
Sheffield DOCFEST
Symbiotic Earth will be screened as part of the Sheffield DocFest Exchange program from June 4 through June 13. According to the programmers, this year’s DocFest Exchange “challenges the ways in which we see the world, and invites us to inhabit perspectives beyond our own.” The program is curated by Jamie Allan. The film will be available for streaming throughout the festival. For more information go to the website.
In addition, on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at 5:00 pm the Festival will host a panel discussion related to the work of Lynn Margulis entitled Learning How to Live Together: A Symbiotic Worldview. There will be a lively discussion with artists, historians and scientists about how a symbiotic understanding of life could inspire a more caring, collaborative and collective view of the world. The participants are: Grégory Castéra (curator and course leader of Collective Practices: Symbiotic Organisations at Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm), Suzanne Pierre (microbial ecologist, biogeochemist, and founder of the Critical Ecology Lab), and Salome Rodeck (cultural and literary Scholar, doctoral researcher with the project Symbiotic Worldview: Theories and Practices of Coexistence in the Anthropocene). For more information go to the Sheffield DocFest website
Shanghai/NYU
From March 19 through May 28, 2021, Shanghai/NYU is presenting a virtual screening of Symbiotic Earth as part of ponds among ponds: an exhibition of threshold behavior and nested life. The webpage for the screening states that “This exhibit takes as its point of departure the theoretical-biological arguments of Lynn Margulis…Her pathbreaking work, which suggests that the Earth was and is today formed by symbiotic cooperative entanglements more than it is by competition, is crucial for understanding and addressing the twin contemporary crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.” The film is available for screening online throughout the exhibition period. To view, please register. The film is being screened in English with Chinese subtitles. Translation and subtitles provided by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
