Symbiotic Earth

Symbiotic Earth continues to be distributed through Bullfrog Films. Because of the pandemic, in person screenings haven’t been possible, but the film has been screened online as part of a large number of conferences and festivals. There is growing interest in the film internationally and screenings are being planned in Spain, Turkey, and Portugal.
The photo above is by photographer Elsa Dorfman, who was Lynn Margulis’ dear friend. Dorfman passed away May 30, 2020. She made beautiful photographs of Margulis one of which we included in Symbiotic Earth. Regenerating Life

We are in production on a new documentary called Regenerating Life. You can follow the film’s progress on Facebook. In many ways, a sequel to Symbiotic Earth, the film first asks, “How does the system of Life (Gaia) sustain itself and maintain the climate?” Then it asks: “How have we humans brought about the climate, environmental, and social crises that plague us?” The story is told as filmmaker John Feldman travels worldwide and talks to scientists, farmers, activists and other people who are developing and implementing a range of solutions to these problems. They are regenerating agriculture, forests, grasslands and even oceans. It challenges the prevailing climate change story and offers a new and hopeful narrative. There’s more information here.

Capra Film (working title)

We have also begun work on a film about the life and work of physicist, system theorist, and deep ecologist Fritjof Capra (author of The Tao of Physics and The Web of Life among others). Capra was profoundly influenced by Margulis, and when John met and interviewed him for Symbiotic Earth, he became interested in making a documentary about Capra’s wide-ranging systems view. For the film, we’ve recently recorded a handful of Zoom conversations between Capra and some of his mentors and colleagues including Luigi Luisi, Hazel Henderson, and Brother David Steindl-Rast. It is a challenging and exciting adventure to explore ways to use online conversations as part of a film project.
