Love your Dung Beetle

A buffalo would put out maybe a hundred pounds of nutrients every day. We had sixty million of them roaming around the west… and then we had zero. Why did the land start to die? We didn’t have all that poop. Dung beetles would follow the herds, there’d be probably a thousand dung beetles for every plop of … buffalo. Dung beetles would bury all that stuff within days. Because they were rolling it into tiny balls, it was drying out, so the flies couldn’t use it. And they would bury it two to three feet into the ground, and the fungi go crazy and the regrowth is just amazing.
