The Renewable Energy Project

When young people, just about to graduate from high school, look into their future, what do they see? What will they do? Where are the jobs? They are surrounded by dire news of job shortages, companies going out of business, rising fuel costs, global warming, and energy and economic crises.

Many contemporary problems are due to the fossil fuel based economy. In the short term, there is a need for greater energy efficiency and, in the longer term, the development and use of a variety of renewable resources for society’s energy needs.

In order to move into the future in a positive, productive, and purposeful manner, students need to see where the frontiers are, where the growth is, where the jobs are. Their world is going to be driven by new forms of energy, so they also need an understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to sort out and get jobs in the “new energy economy.”

The new crop of jobs is in two areas: the new forms of energy and the elaborate infrastructures that get the energy to our homes and businesses; as well as solving/mitigating the problems we have caused by over-dependence on fossil fuels and the detrimental effects on our environment.

The lessons in this unit lay the groundwork for a new energy age for young people in engaging – inquisitive – ways. It helps them understand the energy crisis and the current energy infrastructure; it helps them understand the new ways of getting energy; it encourages them to think about their own energy use; and presents the host of new jobs and new opportunities as the “new energy frontier.”

The film’s narration includes interviews with scientific and business “experts” as well as with students and young entrepreneurs and engineers. They will tell about themselves, the innovative work they are doing, and “what you need to know to make it in this new order of things, and how you can take advantage of what others call a crisis.”

By interweaving these interviews with newly shot video footage, old “informational” films, and small scale models, the film provides an overview of how energy resources are – and will be — produced, delivered, and used in the new energy frontier. In tone, the film is enlivening and optimistic.
